Melvin Luther Watt was an American politician who served as the United States Representative for North Carolina's 12th congressional district from 1993 to 2014. He was a member of the Democratic Party and served on the House Financial Services Committee, where he chaired the Subcommittee on Domestic Monetary Policy and Technology. He was also a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the Progressive Caucus. Prior to his election to Congress, Watt served as an attorney and as a member of the North Carolina Senate. He was born on August 26, 1945, in Steelton, Pennsylvania, and passed away on April 20, 2021, in Charlotte, North Carolina.
